About Me

My name is Ronel and I am the proud owner of ‘Pretoria Rattery’.

I share a tiny house in PTA-East with partner Graham, two rescue guinea pigs and a mischief of rats.

I’m a full time design teacher and part time illustrator. …but what I really want to do is spend more time in the rat room (aka “rat therapy”) and make designer beds and toys they’ll anyway destroy sooner or later!

The Rattery

I have kept and bred rats since 1998 and finally started ‘PTA rattery’ in 2010.

I breed my own line of local rats and recently introduced rats from the imported lines too. I mainly breed Sable Siamese and Husky but have a terrible weakness for black & white marked rats. (I always have at least one black hooded pet rat!)

My goal is to breed pet rats for health, loving temperament and undeniable cuteness!

Roan of Whiskers Rattery is my mentor but I also receive allot of advice from Michele (Jackalhead), Elizabeth (Tiny Paws) and Maureen (Rascals Rat Rescue).    My rats are pets first and even have their own room with play area.

Products

I design and make rattie hammocks, cubes, cuddle cups, peek-a-boo tunnels and tents.

I am releasing a range of ‘Monster Toys’ and chew blocks with add on puzzle-cubes soon!   See my website and FB page for pictures of products and updates.

    Good day,

I am desperately looking for a girl rat to buy for my daughter as a pet. I see on allot of sites that it is better to get 2 rats – but i am not sure.

Please could you kindly assist and give me more info as to where we could purchase a rat.

    Many thanks

Hi there, my daughter recently lost her one pet male rat, and now the other male is all alone. Do you have any young males available?
Also, we are getting a guinea pig soon, we had some before, but that was before we had rats. Can the 2 become friendly at all?

    Regards,
    lelani

    Hi Lelani
It is always good to keep a minimum of 3 rats for this reason. Unfortunately i dont have any rats available at this moment. Please contact Little Squeakers (KZN) or Whiskers (Gauteng) as i know they have pups at this moment.
It is not a good idea to mix species. Most rabbits are agressive towards rats, and rats might kill mice and hamsters… I did notice less agressiveness between my guinea pigs and rats, but they are so different (for one rats are super intellegent and piggies ranking probably lowest on the IQ bar), that they wont be good company to each other. Rats need a friend to snuggle and play…piggies just wants food!

The breeders wont sell you a male if you already own females. They will breed. That is against adoption policy and also cruel to the females to keep being bred, not to mention what would you do with all the babies?? No, best to either get them a female friend or just keep them as the two rats they are already.

As Tails already said, none of the breeders will sell you a rat of the opposite sex. We anyway only sell with a NO BREED contract and take legal steps when we find someone breeding illegaly with our lines! We unfortunately have to do this to protect the rats’ lines. Too many idiots out there breeding without a clue about genetics AS WELL AS ETHICAL breeding!! It is cruel to breed continiously and babies produced are usually weak and more prone to disease. Most of these mass produced rats anyway end up as snake food. It is also irresponsible to breed rats from a pet shop, because you never know what genetic defects they carry.

    Hi Ronel,

I recently found a 1 week old baby rat. He/She is now 6 weeks old and super cute. Unfortunately my family and I can’t spend a lot of time with the little guy and would love to get him/her a little friend. How do I determine the sex of the rat and do you have any rats for sale. I too live in the East of Pretoria. Any help would be appreciated

    Hi

I’m looking for 2 Black Rats, male or female.

Do you possibly have a planned litter arriving or know of any breeders that have?

    I’m from the Guateng area.

Whiskers rattery just had a litter of black rats, but they might all be sold by now. I don’t plan any black litters soon, but might have black hooded/variberk in the May litter.

    Hi Ronel.

My girlfriend wants to get her first rat as a pet and so I am investigating where I can obtain a “hoodie” (as we used to affectionately call them when I was growing up) female in Pretoria from a caring breeder. Any chance you may have one available ?

    Thanks.

PS I co-wrote the first article published in AnimalTalk on keeping and breeding rats back in 1996.
